When Lil Nas X first publicly explained his stage name, he stated it was not intentional that the moniker is "a culmination of every big rapper." The southerner born Montero Hill later expressed that it shouldn't be a problem that he shares a name with the legendary Nas.
It's been my internet alias for a minute," he said on a Beats 1 radio show, "like Nas. The X wasn't included at first. It was just Lil Nas. It was Lil Nas because when I first started rapping I wasn't as serious so it was like, 'Okay, every rapper's name is starting with Lil lately.' So I kind of got stuck with it. I added the X later on after I was more serious. It would stand for the amount of years, I felt, until I'm at the status where I'm considered legendary."
"There's a Jay-Z and there's a Jay Critch," said the "Old Town Road" crooner on the Zach Sang Show when asked about the iconic Nasir Jones.
He further addressed the Lil Nas X/Nas comparisons on Twitter.
